Sumahan On The Water

Sumahan on the Water boutique hotel is a rare example of thoughtful and historical transformation in Istanbul. The hotel is situated in Çengelköy, on the waterfront of the Bosphorus on the Asian-side of the city.
The 5 star hotel is a restored nineteenth century Ottoman distillery, where the high proof ingredient was produced for Rakı, the famous Ottoman tipple. Suma is the word for unadulterated spirit and Han was the word for inn in Ottoman times - hence the unique name, Sumahan on the Water.

Sumahan sits on the very edge of the Bosphorus Straits which separate Europe from Asia and link the cold waters of the Black Sea to the warm waters of the Sea of Marmara and the Aegean beyond. The Sumahan is just outside of Cengelkoy in Istanbul, a village of wooden houses, seafood restaurants and seaside promenades. The hotel is approx. 40 minutes from Atatürk International airport and 20 minutes from the Old City.

The properties of light and water, different at every time of day and in every season provide the instant attraction of staying at Sumahan Hotel in Istanbul. There is a choice of accommodation from a total of 24 unique suites and rooms, each with its own personality, most with fireplaces, but all with magnificent views. The twin level suites have their own Bosphorus-side garden.

LIBRARY
The Library (in the lounge near our reception desk) has 800 books all with a Turkish focus. The books, mostly in English but some just in Turkish for our Turkish-speaking guests, are mainly about places within Turkey and historic sites in Istanbul but also include books on Turkish culture and history, novels by Turkish authors, books on Turkish arts and crafts, Turkish cookbooks, and the like. Our guests often browse the Library while waiting in the lounge, but we also encourage our books to be enjoyed anywhere else in the hotel — dining area, garden, or your room. Happy reading!
